VoteSmart.org: What's the Big Deal?
The San Jose Mercury-News carried a sizable story today about VoteSmart, a site devoted to independent research about candidates for political office. I was intrigued. Back in the day when I was a full-time journalist, I used to rely on the League of Women Voters for objective information about candidates and issues but they've begun in the last few years sullying their reputation (with me, at least) by endorsing positions on public policy issues and thus placing into doubt their objectivity.
So I went to the site and looked first (naturally enough) at the Presidential race. Neither Sen. Obama nor Sen. McCain has filled out the questionnaire the site asks candidates to complete. This leads me to conclude that this site's not going to be a very useful site when it comes to gaining objective data about the candidates. That is disappointing.
I'm still looking for an objective source of information so if you know one, let me know.
