I went to see the Coen Brothers’ latest sensory onslaught, “A Serious Man,” last night and I must say I was quite taken with the film in its entirety. I find it mind-boggling how much dense and intense content those two guys can pack into a movie that remains entertaining while it is engaging and thought-provoking. They are true geniuses of their art form.
The lessons of this one, for me at least (and I don’t think any of this constitutes spoilage but if you are worried, please stop reading now), focused on the order beneath the seeming random chaos of life, the need to search within ourselves for solutions rather than looking outside, and the amazing and unpredictable ways events of our lives and of those around us intertwingle and collide to become the new ingredients of the next round of experience. This makes life maddening at times but it also creates for us an incredibly rich tapestry of threads and loops that make this human adventure we’re on so worth living even at its worst. In the end, then, I have always seen the Coens’ message to be life-affirming and positive even when the circumstances in which it is often couched appear not to be.
I’m resolved now to go watch the other Coen Brothers’ flicks that I have missed over the years. These guys are *good*.
